Sex, Dreams, and Self Control!
VTP Music
From Nashville, TN.
SHOW DESCRIPTION
Sex, Dreams, & Self Control is a fusion of music, spoken word, and standup comedy - with an original alternative folk rock score in which star and writer Kevin Thornton croons like a young John Hiatt or a post-Smiths Morrissey. According to the Nashville Scene, this new work is "courageous" and "darkly funny".
A young midwestern boy being groomed for evangelical ministry faces a terrifying journey of sexual discovery. Sure, it's a little sad at points, but it's mostly funny. Sad and funny all at once - with tons of nostalgic references and 80's kitsch. Exactly what a person wants.
This "groundbreaking" (Out and About Magazine) rites of passage tale presents itself bold and racy, and speaks loudly about sexuality and religion. One guitar. One man. A wild ride.
ARTIST/COMPANY BIOGRAPHY
Fans of Kevin Thornton's underground new wave band Waves on Waves, which has been featured on the MTV Network, might be surprised to learn of his extensive theatre background. Thornton holds a degree in theatre performance and has performed on the theatrical stage statewide and abroad.
With so much free time on the road, Thornton began sketching a semi-autobiographical tale. "On tour, I had been reading a lot of David Sedaris and listening to old Sandra Bernhard concerts, so the brilliance of those two definitely influenced me."
"I began to experiment with my short stories at open mics. Every time, the audience would just light up. I knew I was onto something," said Thornton. "Eventually I had about an hour of material that was audience approved."
'AND THE FRINGIEST PART IS ...'
I've been amazed at how many people have come up to me after a performance, "You just told my story!” And none of these people are alike. Straight. Gay. Middle aged. College aged. The church sure knows how to fuck people up! I present this like stand-up comedy, and laughter is healing. And I really let loose with the embarrassing sex stories. People seem to like that. :)
