SHOW DESCRIPTION
The 4 Food Groups is based on true stories told through original movement, music and spoken word. The piece investigates interactions between a group of four people over a sexually charged dinner. Told in four scenes: The Intro, The Prospect, The Climax and The Morning After, the focus of the show flip-flops between proper etiquette and raw connections between characters. The 4 Food Groups was awarded second place in the 2008 Cincinnati Director's Competition and was described as, “innovative physical theatre with a unique sense of humor.”
ARTIST/COMPANY BIOGRAPHY
Pones Inc. Laboratory of Movement is a movement based performance art group created and directed by Kim Popa and Lindsey Jones and is dedicated to creating original work that blends dance, theatre, music, poetry and more. As teachers, performers, writers, directors, choreographers, producers and designers, Popa & Jones' work often begins as an autobiographical experience that is manipulated and re-told through performers creating a heightened reality.
The 4 Food Groups developed out of Pones Inc's affinity for creating work where both the text and the choreography hold equal weight and cannot stand alone. The text stemmed directly from honest and unabashed instances, interactions, memories and comparisons of the authors. The food element is used to propel the intensity of the work to a more visceral and physical place. Pones Inc. wished to retell this work with a fresh outlook, perspective, and a year's worth of new experiences.
'AND THE FRINGIEST PART IS ...'
The 4 Food Groups is not a traditional play. It is not just a dance, and it is not a linear depiction of characters facing crisis and overcoming challenge. It is a distinct expression of experiences, relationships, and feelings that are abstracted and performed regardless of the specifics. It places more emphasis on interactions, connections, and reactions of both the performers and the audience.
