SHOW DESCRIPTION

Bibliography of Love asks: What would you give up for love? Jan Street Dance Theatre provides an answer, with spoken word, intimate gesture, dynamic partnering, and high velocity dance. Using a collage approach, Bibliography of Love presents a series of vignettes framed by an infamous yet somewhat hidden historic gay and lesbian love triangle: the torrid 1917 affair between Vita Sackville-West and Violet Trefusis, in full view of Vita's bisexual husband Harold Nicholson.

ARTIST/COMPANY BIOGRAPHY

Upon graduation from Bard College in 1991, Artistic Director Christopher Gilbert stood in the sun and said, "I will have my own dance company!" In 2007, after 16 years of choreography, costume design and a 10-year stint in retail management, Jan Street Dance Theatre was born.

The eight-person company starts with a broad question - What is love? - And formulates a collaborative answer using gesture, contemporary dance, spoken word and original music. Past works include Her Mortal Coil (2007), Keep Your Elevation Unseen (2008) and TGV (2008). Jan Street Dance Theatre's mission is to broaden the horizon of physical performance and create an arena for diverse audience and artists to converge in the performance space.

'AND THE FRINGIEST PART IS ...'

Eight accomplished interdisciplinary conspirators spin the provocative question: What would you give up for love? Within a 45 minute span the company re-lives and re-contextualizes an historic gay and lesbian moment, providing a narrative yet non-linear story framed by the letters and books of know authors Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf.
