A solo performance based on interviews with gay Mormons.
Questions of the Heart is an exploration of the often painful intersection of religious faith and sexuality. Ben Abbott—a straight, practicing Mormon—interviewed a dozen men and women of his faith who are gay (or are closely connected to someone who is) and crafted this play based on both the interviews and his journey coming to terms with them. It is a solo performance: Abbott plays the Interviewer as well as the subjects, taking dialogue directly from the transcripts and displaying the vast range of experiences, attitudes, and journeys of those he interviewed.
Questions of the Heart started as an honors thesis research project at UC Berkeley. After Cincy Fringe, I'll be taking it to various venues, and I hope it will become perhaps the first play to succeed in both Provo, Utah, and the San Francisco Castro District.
Ben Abbott is an actor and playwright from San Luis Obispo, California. He trained at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA) in Santa Maria, CA, and received his BA in Theater and Performance Studies from UC Berkeley.
