Who knew narcolepsy and alcoholism could be so fun?

From Venzin-Althaus Explosion!

Show Description: What do you get when you have a manic, narcoleptic lady from Cave City, KY (.2 miles from the national site of Dinosaur World, USA) and a schizophrenic, alcoholic chick from New England (.2 miles from Clam Chowder, USA)? You get two daughters with a killer sense of humor, and the ability to deal with just about anything. Join Megan, Emily and a giant sketch pad, as they tell childhood stories of sleepy outings, drunken holidays and unconditional love.

Most Fringy Thing: These are all TRUE stories! This show is for anyone who has a dysfunctional family, and wouldn't change them for the world. It's funny, bittersweet, heartwarming, humiliating . . . you know, all of the things any audience member would want in a Fringe show.

Trailer:

Artist/Company Bio: Megan Venzin and Emily Althaus met at Western Kentucky University, shortly after forging a friendship they began performing together (or maybe the friendship came after? Who remembers now?) After graduating and embarking on separate journeys into "the real world"  the dynamic duo met up once again, this time in New York City. The Venzin-Althaus Explosion was formed in an outer borough, birthed of love, passion, but most of all the need to make people smile.

Hails from: Astoria, NY

TheConveyor Review: A Night of Well Adjusted Ladies

Fun. I can't find a better word to describe A Night of Well Adjusted Ladies, from Venzin-Althaus Explosion!. The premise rests on both writers', Megan Venzin and Emily Althaus, Mother. Real life experiences are often the most terrifying subject for a writer to bring forth, but both do so without any sign of trepidation. That courage likely stems from the troubles each had with their mother. One mother suffers from alcoholism and the other suffers from narcolepsy.

After seven years, people who still don’t totally understand what the Cincy Fringe Festival is all about should make plans to see A Night of Well Adjusted Ladies, the perfect example of what’s right and fun about Fringe theater. There are more produced, glossier shows in the lineup, to be sure. There are probably more “important” works as well, whatever that means. But pound for pound, I’m not sure you can find a more accessible, charming and pee-in-your-pants-funny show this week.

Here is funny. The subject matter- growing up with alcoholic and
narcoleptic mothers- is dark. But rather that explore these difficult
challenges imposed by adults on their children as problems, the well
adjusted ladies laughed their way through one episode after another.
We ended up laughing all the while with them. It was fast and furious
and a single missed word could muff a punch line, but it was entertainment
that is all too rare most days- extended belly laughs. One of the key
elements that made this really work was the obvious affection the
ladies have for their mothers. Love and laughter conquer all.
PS Saw this a second time, same stories, etc., and I laughed again. This is
a GOOD sign.

Megan Venzin and Emily Althaus didn’t have to dig too deep to find material to mine for their Fringe show. They simply looked to their mothers. “My mother is a bipolar alcoholic and Em’s mom is a manic narcoleptic,” Venzin says. “Fun, right?”

Venzin and Althaus wrote, produced and perform this reportedly hilarious two-woman show about the ridiculous beauty of dysfunctional families. They share stories from their childhoods. They vent. They laugh. They cope. And they think anyone who also thinks he or she has a weird family (read: everyone) just might relate.
